Ex-friend: Iowa murder suspect showed no emotion (AP)

FORT DODGE, Iowa ? Prosecutors called their star witness Friday in the first-degree murder trial of a woman who claims she killed an Iowa neighbor in self-defense: a former close friend who initially believed her account but came forward a decade later to provide key evidence against her.

Farmer Mary Higgins provided critical testimony in the first-degree murder trial of Tracey Richter. Prosecutors say Richter shot 20-year-old Dustin Wehde at her home in Early, a small town in northwest Iowa, to keep him from talking about his role in a plot to frame her ex-husband. Richter says she acted in self-defense after two men broke into her home and assaulted her.

Higgins said she and Richter became close friends after Richter and her second husband moved to Early in 1998. They often spoke on the phone, had coffee together and she drove Richter's son home from school.

Richter flew to Australia for a planned family vacation days after the Dec. 13, 2001, shooting. Higgins said they got together in January or February 2002 after she returned.

"I wanted to let her know that I stand by her," Higgins recalled.

But Richter showed no emotion and acted "like she was telling me her grocery list" when she recounted her sensational version of events: that two men broke into her home and one choked her with pantyhose before she broke free, unlocked her gunsafe ? without her glasses in the dark ? grabbed two guns and shot Wehde while the other man fled.

At one point while Richter was retelling her story, her 11-year-old son walked in and banged his head in the table. "He said, `Why did you go back up there?'" Higgins recalled. "'You didn't have to shoot him. You didn't have to kill him.'" Richter screamed her son's name, and he left the room, she said.

Higgins said Richter told her police found a pink spiral notebook in Wehde's car and "it would prove that John Pitman did this."

Law enforcement officials have testified they kept the notebook a secret until this year because anyone who knew about it would have knowledge of the crime. Prosecutors say Richter, now 45, forced Wehde to write the notebook claiming Pitman, her ex-husband, hired Wehde to kill her and their son. They say she killed Wehde to keep him quiet and then planted the notebook in his car.

Pitman, a Virginia plastic surgeon, testified earlier Friday that he had nothing to do with the notebook. Richter and Pitman were fighting at the time over custody of their son, Bert Pitman.

Higgins testified she didn't tell investigators who interviewed her in April 2002 about the notebook because she assumed they knew about it and they did not ask her. She said she was contacted in March 2011 after investigators re-examined the case and her husband had become church friends with the new Sac County prosecutor, Ben Smith.

Smith met with her at their home, and she told him, "I didn't want any part of this." But when he asked if she knew about details, she responded, "Do you mean that stupid notebook?"

"The blood drained from his face," she testified. "I'd never seen anything like that before. He just went on the ground and sat on the floor and leaned against the kitchen cupboards."

Division of Criminal Investigation agents then interviewed her, and she told them about the notebook but not share the full details.

"I was afraid. I was afraid for myself. I was afraid for my family. And I was afraid for Tracey," she said. "She was my friend and I didn't know where it was going. I didn't know what the notebook meant. I knew it wasn't good."

She said she went into more detail in a second interview with investigators. Her statements were used to draft a criminal complaint charging Richter with murder and leading to her July arrest in Omaha, where she was living.

Higgins occasionally glanced across the courtroom at Richter, who looked away during her testimony.

Prosecutor Douglas Hammerand gave jurors photocopies of the journal's five pages written in Wehde's sloppy handwriting, and they followed along as he read line by line. The journal says Wehde wanted to "make record of mysterious fellow who asked me to work for him (John Pitman)."

"J.P. wants me to get/force his ex T.R. to kill her son Burt and then commit suicide, and if that plan fails Plan B is to make it appear as though T.R. had committed the murder of her son & then committed suicide," he wrote.

Pitman testified the journal described him accurately: a doctor from Virginia who wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, also a surgeon, and take over his practice one day. The diary describes him as a white male in his 40s who was in the Army, once wanted to be a psychiatrist, and is "slightly overweight and out of shape."

It named Pitman's divorce attorney, Stephen Komie of Chicago. Only Richter and his family knew that much detail about his personal life, Pitman said, although he acknowledged on cross-examination that he had conflict with Richter's second husband, who could have gotten personal information about him from her.

The doctor said that he never met Wehde, did not hire him and did not want his son dead.

"Did your ex-wife Tracey Richter despise you?" Hammerand asked.

"I think so," Pitman responded with a laugh. The two separated in 1992 and their divorce was finalized in 1996.

Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry provides a long-awaited design jolt, compensates for a lot

Remember that downright futuristic BlackBerry we spied back in September? Say hello, all over again. RIM and Porsche (of all companies) have just taken the official wraps off of the Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry, a frighteningly beautiful new slab that offers up a forged stainless steel frame, hand-wrapped leather back cover, sculpted QWERTY keyboard, and "crystal clear touch display." It'll ship with an exclusive Porsche Design UI and a bespoke Wikitude World Browser augmented reality app experience, not to mention the "premium, exclusive PINs that help easily identify another P'9981 smartphone user." Fancy. As for specs, it's boasting a 1.2GHz processor, HD video recording capabilities, 8GB of onboard memory, Liquid Graphics technology, a microSD expansion slot, an inbuilt NFC module and BlackBerry OS 7. We're told that it'll be available from Porsche Design stores later this year, but mum's the word on the (presumably stratospheric) price. Head past the ump for T-break's hands-on vid.

Update: MobileSyrup reports that the device shown here will sell for "around $2,000," and they'll be (unsurprisingly) limited in quantity.

ERCIS, Turkey (AP) ? A 2-week-old baby girl on Tuesday was pulled alive from the rubble of an apartment building 72 hours after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Turkey, flattening more than 2,000 buildings and leaving at least 366 people dead.

Television footage showed rescuers in orange jumpsuits clapping as the baby, Azra Karaduman, was removed from the wreckage. A rescuer cradled the naked baby, who was wrapped in a blanket and handed over to a medic.

Rescuers in two cities, Ercis and Van, are still struggling to pull out people trapped trapping people inside mounds of concrete, twisted steel and construction debris. Authorities have warned survivors not to enter damaged buildings and thousands of people spent a second night outdoors in cars or tents in near-freezing conditions, afraid to return to their homes. Some 1,300 people were injured.

Dogan news agency said rescuers had pulled five people out of the rubble alive in the early hours of Tuesday, although many more bodies were discovered.

In the hardest-hit city of Ercis, 9-year-old Oguz Isler was trapped for eight hours beneath the rubble of a relative's home. He was finally rescued, but on Tuesday he was waiting at the foot of the same pile of debris for news of his parents and of other relatives who remain buried inside.

The boy waited calmly in front of what was left of the five-story apartment block that used to be his aunt's home. The city of 75,000, close to the Iranian border, lies in one of Turkey's most earthquake-prone zones.

Turkish rescue workers in bright orange jumpsuits and Azerbaijani military rescuers in camouflage uniforms searched through the debris, using excavators, picks and shovels to look for Isler's mother and father and other relatives still inside.

Dogs sniffed for possible survivors in gaps that opened up as their work progressed.

"They should send more people," Isler said as he and other family members watched the rescuers. An elder cousin comforted him.

Mehmet Ali Hekimoglu, a medic, said the dogs indicated that there were three or four people inside the building, but it was not known if they were alive.

The boy, his sister and a cousin were trapped in the building's third-floor stairway as they tried to escape when the quake hit. A steel door fell over him.

"I fell on the ground face down. When I tried to move my head, it hit the door," he said. "I tried to get out and was able to open a gap with my fists in the wall but could not move my body further. The wall crumbled quickly when I hit it."

"We started shouting: 'Help! We're here,'" he said. "They found us a few hours later, they took me out about 8 1/2 hours later. ... I was OK but felt very bad, lonely. ... I still have a headache, but the doctor said I was fine."

Isler's 16-year-old sister, Ela, and 12-year-old cousin, Irem were also saved.

"They took me out last because I was in good shape and the door was protecting me. I was hearing stones falling on it," said Isler.

The government's response to the quake appeared to be well-coordinated because of the country's vast experience in dealing with killer quakes and their aftermaths. Hundreds of rescue teams from throughout Turkey rushed to the area, racing to find survivors, while Turkish Red Crescent dispatched tents, blankets and soup kitchens.

However, there was still no power and running water in Ercis. Firefighter trucks carried tons of water while giant generators were sent in on trucks.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones and is crossed by numerous fault lines. In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

Istanbul, the country's largest city with more than 12 million people, lies in northwestern Turkey near a major fault line, and experts say tens of thousands could be killed if a major quake struck there.

Cardiac rehabilitation: Even minor fitness improvements are associated with decrease in mortality, especially in the least fit

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2011) ? Cardiac rehabilitation boosts longevity, especially in patients with the lowest fitness levels, Dr. Billie-Jean Martin told the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2011, co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.

"There are benefits to cardiac rehabilitation, regardless of how fit -- or unfit -- you are," says Dr. Martin, a cardiac surgery resident and PhD candidate at the University of Calgary's Libin Cardiovascular Institute. "Patients who take responsibility for their own health and make improvements in fitness can keep themselves alive longer."

Interestingly, the greatest health benefits were derived by those who were least fit to begin with. "For them, even improving fitness a little bit had a major impact," says Dr. Martin. "You don't need to be in good physical condition to reap the benefits of cardiac rehab. In fact, the lower the level of fitness the more valuable cardiac rehab may be."

All over the country, people with heart disease are offered cardiac rehab, a program of exercise, education and counseling designed to help them recover after a heart attack, from a heart condition, or following heart surgery. Cardiac Rehab has been shown to improve outcomes in many clinical studies. Unfortunately patients are not always referred and do not always participate in such programs, says Dr. Martin.

Researchers at the Cardiac Wellness Institute of Calgary (CWIC) conducted a study of 2,867 people with coronary artery disease who participated in a cardiac rehab program between 1996 and 2010. Upon enrollment, they were measured for weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol.

Their fitness levels were tested on a treadmill. They were categorized into three groups: low fitness, moderate fitness, or high fitness based on standardized scores.

Then, they attended 12 weeks of rehabilitation, during which they took their prescribed medication and did regular aerobic, strength, and stretching exercises; they also attended education sessions to learn better nutrition and stress management -- "a full lifestyle revamp," says Dr. Martin. After 12 weeks, they were retested on the treadmill to determine fitness level. In addition, 1,696 of the people in the study returned for treadmill testing one year after starting the program.

Results showed the better a person's level of fitness, the lower the risk of death over the 15 years of the study. "We found that your fitness predicts how you do in the long term," says Dr. Martin. "If you are more fit, you are less likely to die."

"Over 1.3 million survivors are living with heart disease- and each of those life-changing events affects a network of family, friends, and coworkers," says Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson "Cardiac rehabilitation supports patients to integrate lifestyle changes into their lives, with powerful results, yet it is underused. It is important that it is an essential part of the recovery process."

She recommends that if you or a family member are living with heart disease but have not been sent to cardiac rehab to talk to your doctor -- you may still be eligible to participate.

Dr. Martin agrees, adding that the next step is to increase attendance rates at cardiac rehabilitation programs. Right now, only about half of heart patients who are sent to rehab actually show up. The least likely to attend are the elderly and those who are sedentary, and they have the most to gain from it, she adds. "Now we can tell them they'll live longer. I like to tell patients our surgery takes four hours. You have the rest of your life to treat this disease."

Here are some of the important findings of the study:

  • For every step you make in improving your fitness level, there is a 30% reduction in mortality.
  • If you are out of shape, even small changes are helpful.
  • The more you can improve fitness, the greater the benefit.

Saints set points record, beat Colts 62-7 (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? Fans sitting in the upper deck of the Superdome turned their backs to the field, where the New Orleans Saints were setting franchise records, and saluted head coach Sean Payton, who was sitting high above in a booth with his broken leg propped up.

He might as well have had both feet up by the middle of the third quarter.

Drew Brees completed 31 of 35 passes for 325 yards and five touchdowns, and the Saints set a franchise record for points and victory margin in a 62-7 demolition of the hapless Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night.

"I was real proud of how we played tonight, how we handled the week of practice," said Payton, standing on crutches after the game. "We spent a lot of time during the week just talking about us beginning to play our best football, because we really felt while we were 4-2, we hadn't done that."

Payton had called offensive plays from the sidelines since he took his first head coaching job with New Orleans in 2006, but that changed after he was caught up in a tackle along the sideline during a loss at Tampa Bay last week and was injured. Payton had surgery on Monday and didn't attend a practice until Thursday.

Sitting high up in the Superdome for the game against the Colts, he had to like what he saw down below, where offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. called plays for the first time.

Brees had two touchdown passes to Marques Colston and one to Darren Sproles in the first quarter. His fourth and fifth touchdown tosses went to second-year tight end Jimmy Graham in the third quarter.

It seemed the Saints (5-2) could do whatever they wanted, also rushing for 236 yards.

"We had a great game plan. We played with a lot of confidence. Pete did a phenomenal job," Brees said. "It was just our night, one of those games that doesn't come along too often. ... We needed a win like this, especially after the past week and everything we've gone through."

The Saints' point total tied the most in a game by any team since the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970.

The Saints previous franchise high for points in a game was 51 on three occasions and their largest previous victory margin was 42 over Denver in 1988.

When the large video board in the Superdome showed Payton peering out from the booth, the crowd erupted. By the time the third quarter ended, there wasn't much of a crowd left.

Colston had seven catches for 98 yards.

Brees wasn't intercepted before he was replaced by Chase Daniel late in the third quarter, a move that prevented New Orleans' starting quarterback from extending his NFL record of four straight games with at least 350 yards passing.

Mark Ingram rushed for 91 yards on 18 carries but limped to the locker room early in the fourth quarter with what Payton said was a heel injury, adding that X-rays were negative. Sproles carried 12 times for 88 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown.

The Saints had 557 yards and a team-record 36 first downs.

The winless Colts (0-7) are guaranteed to have fewer than 10 victories in a season for the first time in nine years, and at this rate they might not win many games at all.

"That team played better than we did in every area and we just got whooped across the board," Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. "It's one of those things that once you don't do the little things right, there is a lot of bad things that happen to you. Obviously, I have to take responsibility for our team and the way that they played."

Colts quarterback Curtis Painter was only 9 of 17 for 67 yards and had an interception returned 42 yards for a touchdown by Leigh Torrence.

"We just didn't play near well enough," Painter said. "We made a few too many mistakes in the beginning, and any time you're playing a team as good as them, they're going to make you pay. We just kind of got off to a rough start and you've got to credit them. They played well."

For the seventh game this season, Colts star quarterback Peyton Manning was forced to watch because of a neck injury that has sidelined him all season.

As hard as it had to be for Manning to be a spectator in his return to his native New Orleans, it had to be even harder to see his team's mistake-prone performance. These Colts looked more like the bumbling Saints of old that his father, Archie, starred for three decades ago.

Indianapolis fumbled twice in the opening quarter, giving the Saints a relatively short field both times.

The first came on the opening drive on a botched snap that linebacker Jonathan Vilma recovered on the Colts 41-yard line.

Brees then completed his first three passes, the last a 14-yard scoring strike to Colston, who made a leaping catch in front of defensive back Jerraud Powers to make it 7-0.

The Saints then went 81 yards in six plays, including Pierre Thomas's 57-yard gain on a screen pass, and took a 14-0 lead when Brees hit Colston again with a quick 4-yard throw over the middle.

The Saints then took over on their 48 when defensive tackle Tom Johnson stripped rookie running back Delone Carter, and Cam Jordan recovered.

Sproles started the drive with a 16-yard run and finished it with a 6-yard touchdown catch.

Brees' 26-yard completion to Lance Moore ignited yet another touchdown drive, this one covering 69 yards in seven plays and ending with fullback Jed Collins' 1-yard score on a second-effort plunge through a pile of players.

John Kasay added field goals of 23 and 47 yards. The second came as time expired in the half and was set up by Colston's 39-yard reception.

Indianapolis trailed 31-0 before scoring on Carter's 2-yard run, capping a seven-play, 80-yard drive that was highlighted by Carter's 42-yard scamper on the opening play.

NOTES: Pierre Thomas' 57-yard reception in the first quarter was his longest gain from scrimmage in his career. ... RB Joseph Addai left the game after two offensive series because of a nagging right hamstring injury. ... The Colts said reserve TE Jacob Tamme was being evaluated for a possible concussion. ... Saints S Roman Harper left the game in the second half after taking a hit to the head. Harper said he would be fine.

Platini has faith in Blatter's plan to reform FIFA

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:09 a.m. ET Oct. 20, 2011

ZURICH (AP) -UEFA leader Michel Platini believes FIFA President Sepp Blatter is "really motivated" to offer concrete reforms for cleaning up world football after a series of corruption scandals.

Blatter on Friday will announce the first stage of a wide-ranging reform plan he promised in June after a bribery case and wave of ethics allegations tarnished the image of football's world governing body.

"I get the impression that Mr. Blatter is really motivated to change some things," Platini told reporters before attending a two-day session of FIFA's executive committee. "We hope that what Blatter promised us this time becomes fact, and not just ideas."

Platini said Blatter had not yet shared details of his proposed reforms.

"I don't know exactly point by point, because it is his job to organize that," said the former France playing great, who is the leading candidate to succeed Blatter in 2015.

It was also unclear what legal authority Blatter or FIFA's ruling panel have to change governance rules, or if some reforms need approval by all 208 football nations. Their next congress is in May in Budapest.

Still, Platini acknowledged that Europe will have a strong voice in deciding if Blatter succeeds with his program, which could include reopening past allegations of corruption which implicate some executive committee members.

UEFA has eight members on a likely 21-man FIFA panel sitting Thursday, with three seats expected to be vacant.

Platini said his UEFA colleagues had a mandate from Europe's football federations to push for change.

"The mood is the same for all of us in Europe. Don't forget that in Cyprus (last month), the 53 national associations asked us to take care of what could happen in FIFA," he said.

The three absentees are American member Chuck Blazer, who remained in New York for health reasons; Worawi Makudi, detained in Thailand by severe flooding; while a Caribbean delegate has not been chosen to replace disgraced former FIFA vice president Jack Warner.

Both Romney and Obama Want to Make 2012 a Sequel to 2004 (The Atlantic Wire)

Mitt Romney wants to be the John Kerry of this year's Iowa caucuses, while President Obama wants to be the George W. Bush of the general election. Like Romney, Kerry was an early frontrunner later overshadowed by flashier candidates; his case that he was the more electable candidate led to back-to-back wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, essentially endeding the Democratic primary in 2004. But while Romney surely hopes the 2004 similarities end there, Obama hopes that's where they begin. The New York Times' Richard W. Stevenson reports that Obama's reelection team has studied how to do what George W. Bush did to Kerry in 2004 -- take bad news (then Iraq; this time, the economy) and turn it to his advantage, while portraying his opponent as a flip-flopper with no convictions.

Palestinians plan "other options" if U.N. bid fails (Reuters)

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) ? Palestinians want the Security Council to decide on their bid for full U.N. membership soon so they can pursue "other options," the Palestinian U.N. envoy said, repeating charges that Washington is procrastinating to avoid a vote.

Riyad Mansour, in comments to a Palestinian newspaper, did not say what the Palestinians would do once their bid for U.N. membership reached its conclusion. It is widely expected that the bid will fail because of U.S. opposition.

However, Palestinian officials have said that failure at the Security Council would push them to seek an upgrade in their U.N. status to that of a "non-member state," something they can secure from the General Assembly without Security Council approval.

The Palestinians currently hold the status of an "observer entity" at the United Nations.

"We are serious about this application and we want it to reach its logical conclusion in the hope that we succeed," Mansour told Al-Ayyam newspaper in remarks published on Thursday.

"But if we do not succeed, we want this effort to end in a near time frame so we can resort to other options available to us."

Diplomats at the United Nations said on Wednesday the Palestinian quest was likely to come to a head on or around November 11, when Security Council members plan a final meeting to decide their response.

A Western diplomat in New York said he did not expect a council vote on the issue -- if there is one -- to take place on November 11 itself.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas submitted the application for full U.N. membership on September 23 in the face of opposition from the United States and Israel.

They accuse him of trying to bypass the two-decade old peace process with moves they describe as unilateral. Washington says the new Palestinian approach will not bring them any closer to their goal of an independent state.

This can only happen through peace talks, it says.

DEAD END

The Palestinians respond that the peace process has hit a dead end and the continued expansion of Jewish settlements threatens to destroy any chance of the establishment of a viable state. Recognition as a state in the U.N. system will level the playing field in future peace talks, they argue.

Recognition as a "non-member state" will pave the Palestinians' way to membership of U.N. and international agencies to which the Palestinians are currently denied access.

These include the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court, where the Palestinians have suggested they could bring cases against Israel.

Mansour said the United States was attempting to obstruct the application for full U.N. membership, repeating an accusation made by other Palestinian officials.

Washington was using "all means available to it with the aim of obstructing the Palestinian application in the Security Council," he said.

While the Palestinian application looks certain to fail in the council, Abbas has made a major effort to attract nine votes in support, which would force the United States to use its veto and be seen by the Palestinians as a moral victory.

To pass, resolutions need nine votes and no vetoes.

Washington and its allies have been trying to defuse the diplomatic crisis over the Palestinian U.N. application by trying again to revive peace talks which broke down over a year ago because of the settlement issue.

International mediators will hold separate meetings with both sides next week in Jerusalem, though analysts say there is little chance of a breakthrough because of a chasm between them, particularly over the issue of settlement expansion.

Euro zone rescue plans shrouded in doubt (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? A split between the International Monetary Fund and the European Union is threatening to delay Greece's next aid payment in another blow to European efforts to stem the debt crisis.

An admission by French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday that Berlin and Paris were divided over how to make the euro zone bailout fund more effective had already dented hopes that Sunday's EU summit would bring substantial progress.

News the IMF rated EU projections for Greece's debt too optimist and wanted to delay approval of the next aid tranche further complicated the picture. The fund wants to wait until after this weekend's summit to see if discussions produce a clearer picture, EU officials said.

Without an eight billion euros loan payment from the EU and IMF next month Greece faces default, possibly dragging the larger economies of Spain and Italy into the mire and sending shockwaves through the banking system.

Seeking a comprehensive plan, euro zone leaders are racing to agree new steps to reduce Greece's debt, strengthen the capital of banks with exposure to troubled euro zone sovereigns and leverage the euro zone's rescue fund to stem contagion to bigger economies.

But progress appears to be glacial.

Sarkozy flew to Frankfurt on Wednesday evening for emergency talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the head of the IMF and other key euro zone officials. French media reported he missed the birth of his daughter in the process.

France has argued the most effective way of leveraging the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) is to turn it into a bank which could then access funding from the ECB, but both the central bank and the German government oppose this.

Failure to reach a deal at Sunday's summit of European leaders would further undermine financial markets' confidence in the currency bloc and its ability to get on top of a two-year-long debt crisis, which threatens the long-term viability of the single currency.

Markets caught up with the downbeat tone from policymakers. The euro fell and European shares were down one percent having risen this week on hopes of comprehensive action from euro zone leaders.

Since France's finance minister pledged a decisive outcome to the October 23 summit last Saturday, expectations have been downplayed with Germany and others saying it will only be another step along the road to solving the debt crisis.

"I don't believe that such solutions could be made on Sunday that would ... fix everything. But I'm certain that there will be decisions that point to the right direction," Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said in comments broadcast late on Wednesday.

Canada's Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said the "two-steps-forward one-step-back" approach was disconcerting.

FORCED BANK LOSSES?

Adding to the uncertainty, EU officials said there was growing acceptance among key euro zone member states that further private sector involvement in reducing Greece's debt burden may have to be forced, not voluntary, something that has been ruled out up to now.

"Some countries are working under very aggressive scenarios," one EU official said. "Let's be serious, everybody knows that a 50 percent haircut, as Germany is asking for, is not a voluntary move."

In July, private sector investors agreed to contribute 50 billion euros to reducing Greece's debt pile via a debt buyback and swap agreement, which equated to a 21 percent writedown. That is now seen as insufficient to make Athens' debts sustainable.

Greece remains mired in recession and its overall debt is forecast to climb to 357 billion euros ($492 billion) this year, or 162 percent of annual economic output -- which few economists believe can be paid back.

The Financial Times reported that plans to strengthen the banking system, another key plank of the discussions, would fall short of market expectations.

Latest official estimates put the banks capital shortfall at less than 100 billion euros, the FT said, compared with a recent IMF report putting the funding hole at 200 billion and analysts' estimates of 275 billion or more.

With a senior Germany government source saying Berlin remained resolutely opposed to the ECB backstopping the rescue fund, euro zone officials have told Reuters that an alternative model, whereby the EFSF could underwrite a portion of newly issued euro zone debt, is also on the table.

By guaranteeing the first 20-30 percent of any losses, the 440 billion euros EFSF could be stretched three to five times further.

However, analysts are unconvinced that a leverage plan involving a guarantee on first losses would succeed, warning that it could create a two-tier structure in some bond markets and would be meaningless without an explicit commitment from the ECB to go on buying at-risk debt, something it has been reluctant to do.

While Europe's leaders rush to stop a larger writedown of Greek debt infecting others in the euro zone, ordinary Greeks are raging at the prospects of several more years of pain as the price of help from international lenders.

Greek protesters marched on parliament on Thursday, raising the prospect of more violence in strikes against austerity measures parliament is poised to approve to try to stave off bankruptcy.

Running battles between black-clad demonstrators and riot police on Wednesday left streets in central Athens covered with smoldering rubbish and lumps of masonry hacked off buildings in a repeat of clashes seen in anti-austerity protests in June. ($1 = 0.725 Euros)

Police: NY crew took tricks from heist film 'Town'

(AP) ? Police say a prolific burglary crew in New York City has taken cues from the bank heist drama "The Town," splashing bleach on ATMs and cash drawers to try to destroy DNA evidence.

A New York Police Department spokesman said Tuesday several burglary suspects told detectives they'd watched the bad guys in the Ben Affleck-directed film do the same thing. The suspects were arrested over the weekend.

The 2010 movie stars Affleck as leader of a crew responsible for a string of Boston bank and armored-truck holdups. Jon Hamm portrays an FBI agent pursuing them.

The real bandits are suspected in 62 burglaries at delis, discount stores and pizzerias in Brooklyn and Queens. Police say they made off with $217,000.

Four suspects are awaiting arraignment. A fifth is already behind bars on an unrelated weapons charge.

Chile Protests: Police And Student Protesters Clash In Santiago

SANTIAGO, Chile -- Chilean police used water cannons and tear gas to break up a student march for free public education on Thursday, hours after protesters' talks with the government collapsed.

A huge deployment of riot police surrounded students in the Plaza Italia, Santiago's traditional gathering place, where student leader Camila Vallejo tried to lead the march while holding a sign saying "United and Stronger," only to be pummeled by water cannons and forced to retreat by tear gas.

Protesters hurled rocks at police and set blockades ablaze in the streets as officers on horseback chased students onto nearby campuses. Vallejo said officers shot tear gas into their student government offices in "a direct attack against our organization."

Students occupied the Alameda, one of Santiago's main avenues, by dancing in large numbers, but were blasted with water from police. Small groups managed to elude officers and approach the presidential palace before being beaten back by police.

The regional governor, Cecilia Perez, said 132 people were arrested and 25 officers and five civilians were injured. At least a half-dozen journalists were arrested. She called this "lamentable" and said their arrests would be investigated.

Thursday's march was the 37th weekly protest since the movement against Chile's largely privatized education system in began in April, demanding more spending and higher taxes on the wealthy so that quality public education can be free for all.

With both sides accusing the other of intransigence, Chile's government has focused on criminalizing the protests, proposing tough new penalities including up to three years in prison for occupying schools and other public places.

Vallejo called the police crackdown unprecedented, even for a movement that for five months has seen initially peaceful mass marches dissolve into isolated but violent confrontations between hooded demonstrators and helmeted, baton-wielding police.

"We're sure that we represent the great majority of Chileans," Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said Thursday as he defended the government plan to penalize the peaceful occupation of schools and other places, and enable police to demand images taken by photographers and camera crews without a judicial warrant.

Reporters Without Borders, among other journalism groups, condemned the proposal as an attack on freedom of expression.

Polls show 89 percent of Chileans support the students' call for reform, and only 22 percent support President Sebastian Pinera's performance. The president finally agreed to let the students sit down with his education minister, Felipe Bulnes, to discuss their core complaint: that private institutions benefit from public funding while public institutions are starved for resources.

But Pinera, who has said that "nothing in life is free," ceded no ground, and the talks quickly broke down Wednesday night.

Bulnes said the protesters' proposal was regressive and would mean "that the poor subsidize the education of the richest."

"Neither do we want the poorest to finance the richest, but that the richest finance the poor and middle class. How? Through tax reform," Vallejo countered.

The government has proposed increasing scholarships for the poorest Chileans, but Vallejo said that won't solve this as long as taxpayer money flows unequally to profit-making institutions.

Parents Distrust, Delay Vaccines, Survey Finds (LiveScience.com)

Parents are increasingly skipping or delaying vaccines for their young children, despite doctors' concerns that doing so will leave their children and community at risk for preventable diseases.

A nationwide survey found that more than 1 in 10 parents vaccinated their children outside of the recommended schedule developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Only 2 percent of parents in the study refused all vaccines for their children. But many showed distrust of the official recommended vaccination schedule, and 13 percent reported using an alternative vaccine schedule, meaning they skipped or delayed vaccines, according to the paper published today (Oct. 3) in the journal Pediatrics.

Even among the parents who followed the recommended schedule, 25 percent said they believed delaying vaccines avoided side effects, and 29 percent thought allowing parents to skip vaccines let them avoid "those vaccines that aren't really necessary."

Despite these beliefs, vaccine researcher Dr. Paul Offit said that vaccines are safe, and that delaying vaccines does not protect against rare side effects.

"What do you get for delaying it? Nothing," said Offit, chief of Infectious Diseases at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The survey responses also indicated parents were not aware of the risks of delaying vaccines. For instance, 81 percent of parents who skipped or delayed vaccines did not "agree" with the fact that leaving children unvaccinated puts them and their community at risk for disease.

"That's wrong," Offit said. "Those decisions are being made not only on false beliefs on vaccine safety, but also false believes on contagious disease and transmission." He added that the vaccination schedule was developed out of safety data from the clinical trials of vaccines.

What's behind the distrust?

Researchers asked 748 families with children ages 6 months to 6 years about their vaccine choices, education, income and demographics. They also asked parents whether they agreed or disagreed with common facts, fears and assumptions about childhood vaccines.

Dr. Amanda Dempsey, lead author on the study, said parents' past experiences may sway their decisions to skip vaccines in their children. ?The most commonly skipped vaccines were the flu and chicken pox (varicella) shots.

"Most people of parenting age today have had chicken pox, or have had at least something they thought was the flu," Dempsey said, and they survived these illnesses.

However, Dempsey said doctors have seen the rare cases where the virus leads to hospital stays and the risk of death.

Dempsey said she was not surprised that the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine was more often delayed rather than skipped. "That's the vaccine that has been most controversially related to autism," she said. Dempsey said families often delay the vaccine until after ages 2 to 4, which is when signs of autism most often appear. [Vaccines and Autism Timeline: How the Truth Unfolded]

While memory of the flu and chickenpox may sway people toward thinking those vaccinations are unneeded, so too could lack of experience with some diseases.

"When you increase coverage of vaccines, the rates of those diseases start going down," said Dr. Saad Omer, an assistant professor of Global Health, Epidemiology and Pediatrics at Emory University.

So fewer people can remember seeing someone with the disease, and "at the same time, people start hearing more about the real or perceived vaccine adverse events," Omer said.

This creates an environment where parents are more likely to fear the vaccine more than the disease.

Add to that fear the unpleasant experience of injecting young children with five shots at a time, and it could create "a perfect storm" of vaccine fears, Offit said.

Yet while physician associations back the CDC guidelines, only 8 percent of surveyed parents who asked to change the vaccination schedule had to find another doctor because one refused to participate in the alternative schedule.

Distrust is likely to continue

It is now so common for doctors to encounter parents who refuse vaccines, that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) drafted an official position on how to respond to the request, Dempsey said.

The AAP recommends that "we should work with families not to fire them from our clinics," Dempsey said. "Although it would be ideal to get all the vaccines, it's better to get some in and not to alienate the family completely."

But this position comes with drawbacks. "When you say, OK, we'll do it your way, there's a tacit agreement that you are right," Offit said.

Dempsey said the results of the study imply distrust of vaccines is likely to continue. Of the parents who wanted to delay or skip vaccines, 30 percent said they started on the recommended schedule.

"Overall, what our study showed to me is that this problem is not going to go away soon, and it's likely going to get work due to people's tenuous attitudes toward vaccines," she said.

Pass it on: More than 1 in 10 parents are not following the recommended schedule of vaccinations.

This 1080p image resolution now available will probably look far less amazing following the 2160p resolution is available with the Sony PlayStation 4. Add-on the 9.1 channel audio and you have an attractive remarkable entertainment experience at your living room area. The Playstation 4 will most likely not be around until 2011 on the earliest, but ideally Sony will certainly release some official details of the machine shortly. The good thing is the Playstation 3 continues to an incredibly amazing item of equipment that probably has a lot of untapped power.
