Tubular raises $2.5 million to serve burgeoning YouTube industry

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Tubular, a small San Francisco start-up that provides analytics for YouTube content creators, has raised $2.5 million in venture capital in the latest sign of how far the business ecosystem has evolved around the Google-owned video repository.

YouTube was once known as Wild West of online video, but over the past two years Google has focused on raising the quality of YouTube content through a series of direct investments and the cultivation of third-party "networks".

The result is a cluster of small studios, mostly based in Los Angeles, that acts like a digital Hollywood, pumping out slick YouTube hits.

With the ultimate goal of hosting enough high-quality content to lure big-spending advertisers to YouTube, Google doled out more than $100 million last year in grants to its networks and bedroom stars.

In May Google led a group of investors who poured $35 million into Machinima, a leading network, to stoke growth in the YouTube industry.

That market has now grown to the point that it can support its own start-ups, says Tubular's founder Rob Gabel.

COMPETITION

As more semi-professional and professional YouTube creators enter the sector, with increasing competition among them, there is a growing need for analytical services.

Tubular is one such service, allowing customers to monitor and measure when videos get the most views and comments, or the sources of referred traffic.

The software includes a dashboard that displays the real-time analytics, which are generated by tapping into a stream of data provided by YouTube.

"If YouTube is a multibillion-dollar market, then that's billions of dollars going out to content creators who can then invest that again," said Gabel, a former Machinima employee.

"On every platform, from Google to Facebook to Twitter, people have turned to third parties' helpful tools."

At a high level, the pie is large and continuing to grow rapidly. Former Citi analyst Mark Mahaney estimates that YouTube will bring Google a total of $3.6 billion in 2012.

Rich Heitzmann, a co-founder of FirstMark Capital, which led Tubular's latest funding round, said that Google is far from wringing out all of the potential revenue from YouTube.

"We think the ecosystem is at least the size of Facebook's, considering it has a billion users and if you consider the time spent on YouTube," Heitzmann said.

"The advertising opportunities are there, and yet the ecosystem hasn't evolved technologically."

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS

Other investors in Tubular's first tranche of equity financing included High Line Venture Partners, SV Angel, Lerer Ventures and Bedrocket Media Ventures.

Still, Gabel is betting that he can create a long-term, sustainable business on YouTube's platform at a time when some Silicon Valley companies are wary of building on the backs of larger companies.

Twitter, for instance, courted controversy this year when it made a business decision to shut off its firehose of data for a number of popular third-party developers to drive more visitors to its own site.

Allen DeBevoise, the CEO of Machinima who is also a Tubular investor, said that YouTube has reason to foster its independent developers rather than squash them.

"It's a thriving and fast-moving ecosystem now," he said. "But a lot of players are needed to make it all work."

Though Gabel acknowledges that the YouTube industry's rapid expansion is no guarantee of success, he has high hopes.

"Everything is a bit of gamble," he said, "but I feel good gambling on YouTube and online video."

The Do and Don't List of Personal Injury - PersonalInjuryClaimsBlawg

Suffering a personal injury can be a very scary, uncertain, and overwhelming time.? No one expects to be a victim of a personal injury, and therefore most people do not know the right and the wrong <a href=?http://injury.findlaw.com/accident-injury-law/first-steps-in-personal-injury-claim.html?>actions to take or not to take after experiencing such an injury</a>.? However, taking the right steps and avoiding the wrong ones can make a big difference when it comes to personal injury cases and fair compensation for pain, suffering and related medical bills.

Seek Medical Attention

The most important step to take after experiencing a personal injury is to <a href=?http://www.dmv.org/insurance/when-to-seek-medical-attention-for-personal-injury.php?>seek medical attention</a>.? Even if the victim believes the injury is minor, or thinks that monitoring the injury for a few days might be beneficial before seeking medical care, it is important to get the injury examined by a doctor.? The sooner someone?s injuries are examined by a doctor and documented the more believable to they are.? For more serious injuries, starting treatment right away can lead to a better and quicker recovery.

Seek Representation

After your injuries have been stabilized, you will want to seek the representation of a qualified and experienced personal injury attorney.?? The attorney should schedule you for a <a href=?http://injury.findlaw.com/accident-injury-law/meeting-with-an-attorney.html?>consultation</a> to determine whether or not you have a valid claim for a personal injury case.?? If so, the attorney and his or her team will begin to investigating the events that lead up to you suffering your personal injury.? Securing a personal injury attorney will also allow them to speak to the insurance company or any other involved parties on behalf of the victim, making this time less stressful for the injury victim as they focus on recovering from their injuries.

Keep a Paper Trail

It is also important for the injured victim to keep track of medical bills, any payments made on those bills, and appointments.?? They should also document and take notes on doctor?s visits and even their mileage to those visits, as mileage can sometimes be reimbursable within the personal injury case.?? Victims who keep better documentation regarding their injuries and care are more likely to receive fair compensation.

Do Not Take Responsibility

After a personal injury occurs, it is very important that the victim not take personal responsibility for the accident.? This can happen a lot <a href=?http://www.dmv.org/insurance/first-steps-following-a-personal-injury-auto-accident.php?>after a car accident</a> where it is unclear whose fault the accident is.? If a victim jumps out of their car and apologizes to everyone for the accident, they are potentially damaging their personal injury case.? Sometimes it is not until months later when the at-fault driver is discovered.

Do Not Talk to Anyone

Other than the victim?s own lawyer and medical providers, it is imperative a victim not discuss their case with anyone from their insurance company or the insurance company of other involved parties.? Doing so can potentially damage a personal injury case.? Should the victim receive a request for information from such insurance companies, they should politely direct them to their own attorney with any questions or clarifications.? Personal injury victims also should not sign anything without first consulting their own attorney.

Be Careful of Social Media

Not only have potential employers become wise to using social media to their advantage for their hiring practices, <a href=?http://www.pbn.com/Social-Networking-Impacts-Personal-Injury-Cases,65265?>insurance companies and lawyers have as well for their own reasons</a>.? Many personal injury lawyers these days recommend that their clients completely remove themselves for all social media such as Facebook and Twitter.? Anything posted on these sites can potentially be used against personal injury victims to the advantage of the at-fault parties.? If a victim chooses not to delete their personal social media accounts they need to be very careful of what they are posting on such sites.

Taking the right steps and avoiding the wrong steps after a personal injury occurs can be a little confusing.? Once a victim contacts and hires a personal injury attorney, their attorney can direct them more in the direction of what to do and what not to do.? Heading this advice will increase the chances of the victim getting the fair compensation they deserve.

Press Dinner at Mint, an Indian restaurant in NYC, New York | I just ...

Recently, I have been invited to a press dinner at Mint, an Indian restaurant from Chef Gary Sikka, located Midtown East.?

So, before you read this post, remember that it was a press dinner, meaning that the restaurant knew I was a blogger.?

I was really excited to go there as I love Indian food! I started to discover it while traveling to...Hong Kong. But, later, I was lucky to be able to go few times in India, in Mumbai and then later across Rajasthan. I know that a lot of people cannot stand the spices, but not me: it is so tasty and there are so many different dishes to discover with a wide range of flavors.

The restaurant is definitely modern with a nice decor from the bar to the dining room. It has a private room that can accommodate approximately 10 people.

The dining room is very colorful with its drum lamps and Indian paintings, that definitely confirm this place proposes fine dining and is not just casual food.

The service was very nice and we got taken care of by the "Wine Director" as they called him! He proposed to either choose some dishes from the menu or to let the restaurant pick for us. We chose the latter. I looked at the menu anyway and noticed that they offer a large selection of regional Indian food, with lots of options if you are vegetarian. In fact, if you are, Indian restaurants are great spots to get delicious and flavorful vegetarian dishes!

I started of course with my usual Sweet Lassi.

Lassi is a yogurt based drink, made by mixing yogurt with water and Indian spices. It is a great drink to counteract the fire of spicy food! I was a bit disappointed because the sweet lassi tasted like buttermilk with sugar.?

We started of with the Chilly Fish:

The fish (tilapia) was smothered in a thick sauce full of spices and bell peppers. They told us it was spicy but in fact there was just a nice kick. The fish was a bit crunchy and it kind of reminded me of a General Tso fish, in a way, without the sweetness. The Chilly fish was a fantastic dish and one of my favorites of the dinner!

Then, we got the Chicken Malai Kebab:

It was pieces of chicken marinated in herbs and spices and served with a mint sauce. There was also a nice kick to the dish! The chicken was perfectly cooked and moist. Definitely a great appetizer.

The next appetizer was Aloo Methi Tikki:

These are spicy potato (Aloo) and fenugreek cakes seasoned with herbs and spices. In fact it was not the cakes that were spicy, but the onions! I liked it as it was tasty, not heavy and not greasy.

Then came the entrees. First was the Chicken Tikka Masala (cubes of tandoori chicken cooked in a fenugreek tomato sauce).

It had a wonderful color and I just wanted to dive in it! This sauce was so good and creamy! I could have eaten the whole plate of it! Not spicy at all also! This is my test dish whenever I go to an Indian restaurant!

The second entree was Lamb Pasanda (lamb cooked in a cashew sauce):

I did not really like this specialty from Kashmir: the lamb was tough and the sauce was lacking flavors.

Then there was the Saag Paneer (homemade cheese with sauteed spinach):

I have never been a big fan of that dish and the only time I liked it was at India on the Hudson in Hoboken. This one did not change my mind...However, I liked the homemade cheese...

What I surely appreciated was the garlic naan bread!

It was freshly made, fluffy with a bit of butter and did not have too much garlic. Simple but delicious!

Of course, to finish, we had to try traditional Indian desserts. It is interesting to think that a lot of people ignore Indian dessert because they do not think they have some or do not know what they are. For sure, you need to like eating sweet! But there are several desserts that I love eating! On the top is the Gulab Jamun,??deep fried milk dough that is ?immersed in a sugar syrup.

It was sweet, but not too much. It had a perfect consistency, not too firm, but not mushy, and was served warm. I inhaled it!

The second dessert is Ras Malai.

It means literally Juicy Cream. It is a sweet dessert made of cheese balls (to simplify the explanation...) simmered in milk and cream. I loved it too! Not too sweet and the cheese balls had a nice texture.

If I were to go back, my meal would be: Chilly fish, Chicken Tikka Masala, Gulab Jamun and garlic Naan. The question is: would I go back? I enjoyed most of the dishes, but expected more as the description of the restaurant was Indian dishes with a modern flair. I wish for instance that there were twists to traditional dishes that are Chicken Tikka Masala or Saag Paneer (a deconstructed version?). So, yes, I would go back, especially to try their weekday $12 buffet, as well as other dishes they are proposing that seem to be delicious (pricier though). And if you are vegetarian, you will surely enjoy the wide selection of vegetarian dishes.?

Enjoy (I did)!

And remember: I just Want To Eat!

Leap forward in brain-controlled computer cursors: New algorithm greatly improves speed and accuracy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2012) ? Stanford researchers have designed the fastest, most accurate algorithm yet for brain-implantable prosthetic systems that can help disabled people maneuver computer cursors with their thoughts. The algorithm's speed, accuracy and natural movement approach those of a real arm, doubling performance of existing algorithms.

When a paralyzed person imagines moving a limb, cells in the part of the brain that controls movement still activate as if trying to make the immobile limb work again. Despite neurological injury or disease that has severed the pathway between brain and muscle, the region where the signals originate remains intact and functional.

In recent years, neuroscientists and neuroengineers working in prosthetics have begun to develop brain-implantable sensors that can measure signals from individual neurons, and after passing those signals through a mathematical decode algorithm, can use them to control computer cursors with thoughts. The work is part of a field known as neural prosthetics.

A team of Stanford researchers have now developed an algorithm, known as ReFIT, that vastly improves the speed and accuracy of neural prosthetics that control computer cursors. The results are to be published Nov. 18 in the journal Nature Neuroscience in a paper by Krishna Shenoy, a professor of electrical engineering, bioengineering and neurobiology at Stanford, and a team led by research associate Dr. Vikash Gilja and bioengineering doctoral candidate Paul Nuyujukian.

In side-by-side demonstrations with rhesus monkeys, cursors controlled by the ReFIT algorithm doubled the performance of existing systems and approached performance of the real arm. Better yet, more than four years after implantation, the new system is still going strong, while previous systems have seen a steady decline in performance over time.

"These findings could lead to greatly improved prosthetic system performance and robustness in paralyzed people, which we are actively pursuing as part of the FDA Phase-I BrainGate2 clinical trial here at Stanford," said Shenoy.

Sensing mental movement in real time

The system relies on a silicon chip implanted into the brain, which records "action potentials" in neural activity from an array of electrode sensors and sends data to a computer. The frequency with which action potentials are generated provides the computer key information about the direction and speed of the user's intended movement.

The ReFIT algorithm that decodes these signals represents a departure from earlier models. In most neural prosthetics research, scientists have recorded brain activity while the subject moves or imagines moving an arm, analyzing the data after the fact. "Quite a bit of the work in neural prosthetics has focused on this sort of offline reconstruction," said Gilja, the first author of the paper.

The Stanford team wanted to understand how the system worked "online," under closed-loop control conditions in which the computer analyzes and implements visual feedback gathered in real time as the monkey neurally controls the cursor to toward an onscreen target.

The system is able to make adjustments on the fly when while guiding the cursor to a target, just as a hand and eye would work in tandem to move a mouse-cursor onto an icon on a computer desktop. If the cursor were straying too far to the left, for instance, the user likely adjusts their imagined movements to redirect the cursor to the right. The team designed the system to learn from the user's corrective movements, allowing the cursor to move more precisely than it could in earlier prosthetics.

To test the new system, the team gave monkeys the task of mentally directing a cursor to a target -- an onscreen dot -- and holding the cursor there for half a second. ReFIT performed vastly better than previous technology in terms of both speed and accuracy. The path of the cursor from the starting point to the target was straighter and it reached the target twice as quickly as earlier systems, achieving 75 to 85 percent of the speed of real arms.

"This paper reports very exciting innovations in closed-loop decoding for brain-machine interfaces. These innovations should lead to a significant boost in the control of neuroprosthetic devices and increase the clinical viability of this technology," said Jose Carmena, associate professor of electrical engineering and neuroscience at the University of California Berkeley.

A smarter algorithm

Critical to ReFIT's time-to-target improvement was its superior ability to stop the cursor. While the old model's cursor reached the target almost as fast as ReFIT, it often overshot the destination, requiring additional time and multiple passes to hold the target.

The key to this efficiency was in the step-by-step calculation that transforms electrical signals from the brain into movements of the cursor onscreen. The team had a unique way of "training" the algorithm about movement. When the monkey used his real arm to move the cursor, the computer used signals from the implant to match the arm movements with neural activity. Next, the monkey simply thought about moving the cursor, and the computer translated that neural activity into onscreen movement of the cursor. The team then used the monkey's brain activity to refine their algorithm, increasing its accuracy.

The team introduced a second innovation in the way ReFIT encodes information about the position and velocity of the cursor. Gilja said that previous algorithms could interpret neural signals about either the cursor's position or its velocity, but not both at once. ReFIT can do both, resulting in faster, cleaner movements of the cursor

An engineering eye

Early research in neural prosthetics had the goal of understanding the brain and its systems more thoroughly, Gilja said, but he and his team wanted to build on this approach by taking a more pragmatic engineering perspective. "The core engineering goal is to achieve highest possible performance and robustness for a potential clinical device, " he said.

To create such a responsive system, the team decided to abandon one of the traditional methods in neural prosthetics. Much of the existing research in this field has focused on differentiating among individual neurons in the brain. Importantly, such a detailed approach has allowed neuroscientists to create a detailed understanding of the individual neurons that control arm movement.

The individual neuron approach has its drawbacks, Gilja said. "From an engineering perspective, the process of isolating single neurons is difficult, due to minute physical movements between the electrode and nearby neurons, making it error-prone," he said. ReFIT focuses on small groups of neurons instead of single neurons.

By abandoning the single-neuron approach, the team also reaped a surprising benefit: performance longevity. Neural implant systems that are fine-tuned to specific neurons degrade over time. It is a common belief in the field that after six months to a year, they can no longer accurately interpret the brain's intended movement. Gilja said the Stanford system is working very well more than four years later.

"Despite great progress in brain-computer interfaces to control the movement of devices such as prosthetic limbs, we've been left so far with halting, jerky, Etch-a-Sketch-like movements. Dr. Shenoy's study is a big step toward clinically useful brain-machine technology that have faster, smoother, more natural movements," said James Gnadt, PhD, a program director in Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health.

For the time being, the team has been focused on improving cursor movement rather than the creation of robotic limbs, but that is not out of the question, Gilja said. Near term, precise, accurate control of a cursor is a simplified task with enormous value for paralyzed people.

"We think we have a good chance of giving them something very useful," he said. The team is now translating these innovations to paralyzed people as part of a clinical trial.

This research was funded by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation; NSF, NDSEG, and SGF Graduate Fellowships; DARPA ("Revolutionizing Prosthetics" and "REPAIR"); and NIH (NINDS-CRCNS and Director's Pioneer Award).

The 5 High Things To Know Earlier Than Buying Internet Hosting ...

Web hosting Not the only real Sector Planning Green

The Surge in Thoroughly clean, Green Power
The renewable energy sector is often a progressive local community, and it happens to be development amongst forward-thinking industries and nations is admirable. The world wide web internet hosting market, as an example, has the distinctive honor of using a powerful purpose while in the reduction of Co2 emissions by placing considerable pressure on knowledge facilities being considerably more electrical power successful. Although many internet hosts have not yet recognised this product, website owners and online business owners worldwide have. Internet business owners are moving their web-sites to green hosting providers in substantial quantities.

Knowledge centers second only into the airline market in Carbon dioxide emissions.
A research by Mckinsey & Co. predicted that knowledge centers all surpass the airline marketplace as the largest source of Co2 emissions by 2020 and called for information centers to double their electricity efficiency by 2012. Although many facts centers have not nevertheless gone green, there are a few progressive, forward-thinking facts facilities that already have green woven into their corporate culture.

Data center sector likely green and shifting toward strength efficiency.
Although many green data center projects are still on the drawing board, the plans are with the works for further and extra info facilities being built that utilize electrical power efficiency and renewable vitality. A number of green information center projects have however to break ground, but there are a few progressive pondering companies that already have green web hosting information centers in operation.

Airline field recognizes the importance of a lot more efficiency.
Amid rising concern about aviation pollution, British Airways introduced a ?CO2 emission calculator? on its website, letting passengers pay to offset the carbon dioxide generated by their flights. Continental Airlines has gone furthest among the major airline carries to green their operations. Besides spending a great deal more than $16 billion over the past ten years to replace its fleet with additional effective aircraft, it installed fuel-saving winglets that reduce emissions by up to 5% on most of its Boeing 737s and 757s, and reduced the nitrogen oxide output from ground equipment at its Houston hub by over 75% since 2000.

Banking business and climate-change investments.
In 2005 when Goldman Sachs became a pioneer between companies adopting environmental policies, critics said chief executive Hank Paulson was imposing his green ethos. Wrong. The bank has become even far more planet-friendly since Paulson left. Why? Because it is doing lots of green internet marketing business.

Goldman?s investment of $1.5 billion in cellulosic ethanol, wind and solar have paid off. Texas Pacific and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts turned to Goldman, which had built bridges to environmental groups, as they prepared a bid for Texas electrical power company TXU.

Nations are going green and increase renewable electricity use.
After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan opted to shut down all of its nuclear power stations and Germany followed suit after substantial public pressure. This seems to have paved the way for greater investment in solar and wind electricity projects across the globe.

Germany emerging as a leader in renewable strength.
Germany has always been a leader in renewable vitality, but if they want to replace nuclear power with something less damaging, then they will have to embrace wind power. A research from industry group Bundesverband WindEnergie suggests that the country will have to give 2% of the its land mass to wind farms in order to substitute nuclear power. By using 2% of Germany?s landmass, the country would be able to provide as much as 65% of the demand for electricity in the country. If they wanted to increase this, they could always construct additional offshore wind farms, which are proven for being a little more reliable than land-based ones.

High tech is falling all over itself to go green.
To meet the demands of business proprietors and corporations that seek green IT partners, nearly all vendors have promised to move their top suppliers to eco-friendly firms. Hewlett-Packard, one example is, has done the most to mitigate the wave of companies going toward green IT firms. HP owns massive e-waste recycling plants and has promised to cut vitality consumption by 20 percent.

Companies are battling for competitive advantage by likely green.
So how did green hosting become so influential for companies looking for a distinct advantage? In competitive industries, companies are trying to set the standard for detailed environmental accountability and one way to do this is to choose a green web hosting provider.

Traditional website internet hosting becoming obsolete.
Businesses can make a profit without losing their soul and customers are looking for progressive companies that demonstrate their environmental conscience by choosing a green hosting provider for their website. The Internet group is impressed to see how involved in sustainability their internet hosting partners are. Website owners are tremendously knowledgeable and want to do the right thing.

Green internet hosting is inside the movement that is bringing common sense back with the web hosting sector.

Novopay: Flawed school pay system "rushed" | Stuff.co.nz

A key figure involved in setting up the Novopay service says the Education Ministry rushed out the system because it was desperate to meet self-imposed deadlines.

School Payroll Reference Group adviser and Baradene College principal Sandy Pasley says the rushed decision saw mistakes occur before the error-ridden payroll even launched. She also says Talent2, the firm that designed Novopay, completely misjudged the complexities of the project and the Education Ministry relied on that flawed judgment. The reference group was assembled in 2008 to give feedback to the ministry on Novopay. However, advisers could not make decisions.

Pasley said Novopay was meant to roll out in stages so problems could be identified early and fixed.

"Right up to last year there was going to be a staged rollout and we talked about trialling Novopay," she said. "It should have been trialled on a smaller basis first. But it got to the stage where it was so complex to put together and the deadline was looming."

Instead, it was pushed out nationwide in August - leading to countless mistakes, with more than 8000 logged errors in teachers' pay.

Some staff have not been paid since the launch.

A breach of security revealed last week in the Sunday Star-Times meant staff at Auckland school Marshall Laing Primary were given access to hundreds of teachers' banks accounts and personal details.

Pasley said a rollout as planned could have limited this kind of problem.

"I'm really disappointed that it couldn't have been trialled with a much, much smaller population first. Some of these problems might have surfaced and been ironed out before it went nationwide."

Education Ministry group manager Rebecca Elvy admitted the original intent was to roll Novopay out in stages. The South Island should have received the service in 2010 and the North Island in 2011.

"This was an agreed decision by the ministry and Talent2," she said.

But "time pressures made a staged rollout not feasible" and it was decided all schools would go live on the same date, August 20 this year.

Pasley said the delay could be blamed on Talent2 not realising the intricacy of the project.

"Maybe Talent2 misjudged the complexities of the New Zealand payroll system," she said.

"I think the Ministry of Education relied on Talent2 to deliver, so have the whole sector."

The ministry has stood by claims Novopay was "rigorously tested" prior to its implementation.

"In addition to the continuous testing of system features as they were developed, there were two full simulations and six cycles of payroll verification before go live," Elvy said.

However, Pasley isn't convinced the ministry and Talent2 did enough.

Elvy would not comment on what accuracy the ministry required from Talent2, nor what accuracy it was currently performing at.

"The answer to both of these questions is commercial and in confidence. We cannot disclose this without breaching our terms of the contract," she said.

Muhammad reinstated by NCAA, expects to play Monday

No. 1 recruit Shabazz Muhammad, the face of UCLA's young and talented team in 2012, has been reinstated to the Bruins roster and is now eligible to play, according to an NCAA release.

UCLA was set to appeal the NCAA's original ruling on Friday that Muhammad was ineligible due to an amateurism violation that stemmed from travel expenses he accepted from North Carolina financial advisor and alleged family friend, Benjamin Lincoln. But according to the NCAA's statement, the two sides simply resolved the case by "acknowledging amateurism violations occurred" - a decision that Muhammad and his lawyer Bob Orr had not been consulted on.

From there, UCLA requested that Muhammad be reinstated after a penalty of missing 10 percent of the season (three games) and repaying approximately $1,600 in impermissible benefits. The NCAA agreed with the university's actions, making him eligible to compete, considering he had already missed the team's first three games of the season. Muhammad is likely to take the court for the first time Monday against Georgetown in the championship round of the Legends Classic.

Soon after the announcement was made, Muhammad made his happiness known, via Twitter.

"#FREE," he tweeted.

Muhammad later released a statement that said: "I am excited to be able to play for UCLA starting next Monday. My family and friends were very supportive of me throughout this process and I couldn't have gone through this without them."

Orr made clear in an interview with the Register on Friday that UCLA, not Muhammad, admitted that violations of amateurism had occurred. But even with that decision - something Orr said clearly came down to a give-and-take between the NCAA and UCLA - Orr and Muhammad agreed with both sides that this was the best result for everyone involved.

"UCLA admitted (amateurism violations)," Orr said. "We haven't admitted anything. ... Nowhere in the (NCAA's statement) does it say that Shabazz was a part of that decision. From his standpoint, all he wants to do is play basketball. It's been very frustrating, long, difficult process for Shabazz and his family, and I think it's in everybody's best interest ... for him to take the court."

Muhammad had been investigated in some regard for over a year before being deemed ineligible just hours before UCLA's home opener against Indiana State. Since then, the NCAA and Muhammad's family and lawyer have released a flurry of statements to justify their sides in the case, as the Muhammad family continued to remain steadfast that Lincoln was a family friend who had gone through the necessary paperwork to help Muhammad pay for three trips to two NCAA schools, Duke and North Carolina.

Following the release, UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero, coach Ben Howland, and Muhammad himself all expressed their relief that the long, arduous case would be over.

"We are extremely grateful that this matter has come to a conclusion," Guerrero said in a statement. "This entire process has been challenging on many fronts, but we believe strongly in the principles of fairness, integrity, and due process. We are satisfied with the outcome and pleased that Shabazz will be able to join his teammates on the floor, representing UCLA in Brooklyn on Monday night."

Said Howland, also in a statement: "I am relieved that this long, arduous process has come to an end. So many people worked very hard on this case and I am eternally grateful to them as well as the Bruin family, who stood by us throughout. I am pleased that Shabazz will be able to begin his collegiate career."

Orr had nothing but good things to say about how UCLA handled the situation, as he believed the Bruins had stayed true to their word after both sides spoke about a potential NCAA investigation when Muhammad first committed to play with UCLA.

As for the NCAA, many have already used Muhammad's case to argue again for sweeping reform of the governing body's policies regarding amateurism, something Orr fervently supports, especially after witnessing Muhammad subjected to this recent NCAA process.

"I think the process that the NCAA uses is fundamentally wrong in that it doesn't protect or respect the rights of these young men and women," Orr said. "My frustration is that Shabazz and his family have had to go through this, like lots of other young people have. It seems to me that the investigation process here is one more example of why there needs to be sweeping reform of the way this all plays out."

Continued Orr: "I'm sure (UCLA) is hoping that they will be in the Final Four in Atlanta, and the NCAA will be making huge sums of money off of them. It's in everybody's best interest, right?"

The Bruins were 3-0 without Muhammad, but narrowly escaped defeat over a pesky UC Irvine team that took them to overtime Tuesday night. Before that game, UCLA's freshmen warmed up before the game wearing T-shirts that said "Free Shabazz" - a practice that was quickly halted by Howland.

But after a lengthy process with the NCAA, Friday marked the end of Muhammad's eligibility concerns, as the nation's No. 1 recruit was indeed free to play at last.

Clear vs. Any.DO vs. Wunderlist: task list apps for iPhone shootout!

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: tasks apps for iPhone shootout!

Since the iPhone is on-the-go as much as you are, task list apps are a natural way to stay organized. If you don't need a full on task-manager like OmniFocus, Todo, or Things, simpler task list apps are a perfect way to make sure things are getting done on time, every time. Any.DO, Clear, and Wunderlist are three of our favorite task-list apps, but which one is the best for you?

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: User interface and design

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: User interface and design

Any.DO has a super clean interface that it means to allow you to add and organize tasks quickly and easily. There are two main views that Any.DO allows you to toggle between - date and folder based. The date based view will combine all your different lists to show you what needs to get done today, tomorrow, this week, and later. It will pull them according to how you added tasks to Any.DO.

Once logging into Any.DO, the default date based list view appear and you can immediately start adding tasks. Each section had a plus sign next to it that allows you to add a task quickly. To access other views, there is a pull up located along the bottom of the screen. Flick it upwards and you can switch between date and folder view as well as view a list of completed tasks. Folder view will automatically sort all your tasks by folder groupings instead of time.

Tapping on any task in Any.DO will give you a list of options that you can apply to that task. You can mark a task as important, drop it into a folder, set a reminder, add notes to it, or share it with a contact.

Any.DO's settings can be access by pulling up the bottom menu and choosing the gear icon in the lower right hand corner. From here you can edit your folders, use the Any.DO moment feature, change between a dark and a light theme, control what the badge count does, change the language, and change the speech input language. There isn't much to configure but the options you may need to change are easily accessible right within the main app settings.

Clear is a gesture based app that aims to make adding tasks lightning fast. Upon first launching clear you'll be given a brief tutorial on the gestures that are supported. You can also change the color theme of Clear to your liking as there are tons to choose from.

The main screen of clear will show your lists. Inside each list you will find your tasks. Since Clear is gesture and layer driven, you use gestures to move up or down levels. If you're on the main list screen, tapping on the list will expand it. Tapping on a list item will allow you to edit it. Tapping anywhere else on the screen brings up a space to add a new task. To move back up a level, simply swipe downwards over the list or pinch your fingers together to collapse it.

While on the main list screen, swiping down or pinching will bring you up one more level. From here you can access your lists, themes, and view more tips and tricks. The settings panel of Clear can also be accessed within the app. Here you can control badge count for all tasks or just active lists as well as turning on and off features such as iCloud sync, sounds, and vibration.

Wunderlist's interface is set up to show you lists somewhat in the form of inboxes. You can tap the pencil in the upper right hand corner to edit current lists or tap in the box above your lists in order to quickly create a new one. Tapping the edit pencil also allows you to reorder lists any way you'd like. If you want your work list above your home list, you can simply drag it in that position.

The main navigation of Wunderlist runs across the bottom of the app and consists of lists, starred items, due today, overdue, and more. More is where you can find app settings as well as other ways to sort your lists. Similar to Any.DO, Wunderlist allows you to view tasks that are associated with time. You can choose to view all tasks, tasks that are already completed, ones due tomorrow, in the next 7 days, later, and ones that have no due date.

Wunderlist allows you to star tasks that are important and they'll filter into the starred section. You can easily star any task by simply tapping on the star next to the task name. It'll automatically filter into that section of the app. To mark a task as done, just check it off by tapping on the check mark box next to its name.

There isn't a ton of customization with Wunderlist but settings does allow you to change the background image, date format, language, and set up sending tasks by email.

While Any.DO, Clear, and Wunderlist all have simple to navigate and easy to understand designs, Any.DO has most logical user interface and it's by far the easiest to use. Once you get to understand Clear and become used to the gestures, it's just as user friendly but doesn't have nearly as many options when it comes to interface as what Any.DO offers, which makes it a nice compromise.

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Creating lists and tasks

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Creating lists and tasks

To create a list or task in Any.DO you can either manually enter it or just pull down to use the voice input feature. This is something that's unique to Any.DO and adds a lot of value for users who quickly need to input something without interrupting their workflow. Swipe down from the main screen and tap on the microphone icon. Say what you need the app to add and then tap the checkmark to input it.

Any.DO will try and autocomplete tasks you are inputting by offering suggestions. They're based on places around you and on tasks you've previously entered into the app. It makes adding tasks a lot less painful than manually typing them.

Sorting tasks in Any.DO is easy and can be done within just a few taps. A swipe up from the bottom of the screen lets you order tasks by time or by folder. If you want to see a quick view of what you have to do you can tap into settings and view Any.DO moment which gives you a glimpse of what you need to do today. You can then quickly set reminders for things you have do or move them to a later time. It's a great feature but something that's rather hidden in settings. It'd be nice to see this feature pulled into the main menu for quicker access.

Clear uses multiple layers within the app and each layer houses lists and tasks. Tapping anywhere on the screen inside of a list brings up a slot to enter a new task. Just type in data and hit return on your keyboard and it adds it to your task list. From there you can pinch to close lists or swipe upwards in order to close a list and view your main list. Swiping upwards one more time brings you to the main menu that houses settings and themes.

To mark a task as done you can swipe to the right and it will be marked as complete. Swiping to the left on a task will delete it from your list. You'll notice that completed tasks will show up at the bottom with a line through them. To clear them from your list completely you can pull up on the task list and release and it will clear away old tasks that were marked as complete. While Clear doesn't have very many options for organizing and sorting, if you're looking for a simple task list that just works, it does that wonderfully and beautifully.

Wunderlist is a nice compromise between Any.DO and Clear. Task entry is simply and only ever a few clicks away. When on the main task list screen you can quickly add a new list or tap into any existing list and start typing a task into the task box above your list.

Aside from adding general tasks to lists the starred section easily shows you important tasks as a simple glance. When in settings you can view all options for time based tasks and how you want to view them. While Any.DO makes this feature apparent in their main menu, Wunderlist has chosen to put it in settings. I'm not sure this makes sense to me and many users may not think to open settings in order to sort tasks. While it's a wonderful feature to have, it should be presented in a way that makes it easier for users to find.

If you need to create lists, tasks, and organize them quickly and efficiently, Any.DO is a happy medium between Wunderlist and Clear that allows you to organize just as fast as you enter. While Clear allows for the quickest entry, Any.DO's navigation will make more sense to many.

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Task reminders and notifications

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Alerts & Notifications

Any.DO, Clear, and Wunderlist all offer push notifications for reminders. What is really comes down to is how customizable they are. Any.DO by default will show a badge for any tasks that are due today. You can easily change this in settings to cater to certain lists or any tasks you'd like the badge to represent. Any.DO will also send you push notifications for any task you've set a reminder for. To set a reminder you can tap on the task name and then choose the reminder icon and set a time you'd like to be reminded. It's easy to access from any task and fast, which is what most users want.

Clear allows you to change badges in two forms, for the last active list or for all tasks. This means that you can have badges represent all the tasks currently listed in Clear or you can choose to have it only represent the last list you accessed before you closed out the app. There is no option to configure only certain lists or tasks due today since clear doesn't allow you to set times for tasks. This also means there are no push notifications inside Clear. You'll see a badge but that's it.

Wunderlist by default will show a badge for any tasks that are overdue. To my knowledge there isn't a way to change this within settings. As far as notifications go, you can set reminders for any task you'd like. After creating a task you can tap into it and choose a due date or set a reminder. Wunderlist will then send you a push notification at the designated time you specified.

If you need push notifications that are customizable as well as a badge count that's just as flexible, Any.DO is the only option since Clear lacks push notification support and Wunderlist doesn't allow you to customize badge counts.

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Syncing lists and tasks

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Syncing lists and tasks

Any.DO uses its own native sync option. You can either create an account by signing up for an Any.DO account or by signing in with Facebook. Once you've set up an account, there is nothing to configure, it just works. Any device you've got Any.DO installed on will sync seamlessly.

Clear now supports iCloud and once it's enabled within settings, all your tasks will automatically sync between iPhone, iPad, Mac, or any other device you've got Clear set up on.

Wunderlist supports native syncing through their own login service. Just like Any.DO, once you've signed in there's absolutely nothing to configure. If you sign into your Wunderlist account on the web or on any other device that Wunderlist supports, your items will be there.

As far as syncing services are concerned, all three clients have excellent syncing support and no matter which you choose, you'll have no issues accessing your data across several devices. Tie.

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Cross-platform support

Any.DO has support for iPhone, Android, and a Chrome browser extension with a native web version coming soon. I've been using the Chrome extension for a few days now and haven't had any problems. The only think I did notice is that syncing runs behind a few minutes but other than that, it works seamlessly with the iPhone app. There currently isn't a native iPad version so if you need iPad support, Any.DO may not be your best option.

Clear is available in the App Store for iPhone and in the Mac App Store. There isn't any native iPad or Android support so when it comes to syncing across platforms or to the iPad, it carries about the same support as Any.DO but instead of browser extensions, there is a native app for Mac users.

Wunderlist has been around for quite some time and supports quite a few platforms including iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, and PC. If you have a tendency to jump between platforms and need a task list system that can go with you, Wunderlist is it and has the best support of all three options.

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Pricing

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Pricing

Any.DO is available for free in both the App Store for iPhone and the Android Marketplace. The browser extension for Chrome is also free. Wunderlist is also a free option across all platforms and with the list of support you have, you really can't beat it.

Clear is the only option that is a paid option. The iPhone version of Clear is currently available in the App Store for $1.99 while its Mac counterpart will run you $9.99 in the Mac App Store. If you love gestures and want an app that takes full advantage of them, Clear is it and it's well worth the price if you need a quick and efficient task manager.

If price is a deciding factor, Wunderlist has the best support and with a free price tag, there's no competition.

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: The bottom line

Any.DO vs. Clear vs. Wunderlist: Bottom line

Any.DO, Clear, and Wunderlist all have great options when it comes to syncing and work well to keep you organized and on task. It comes down to how you need to organize your tasks and whether or not notifications matter to you.

While Wunderlist has the best cross-platform support, the interface is not as simple as either Clear or Any.DO. It also feels dated as it hasn't seen a complete app overhaul since iOS 4. I'd only recommend Wunderlist over Clear and Any.DO if you really need that cross-platform support.

For most, it will come down to choosing between Clear and Any.DO. If push notifications and organizing lists by time are must haves for you, look no further any Any.DO. It'll do everything you need and probably more. If you prefer a native Mac app and a beautiful simplistic interface that's gesture driven, Clear is where it's at.

Facts & other stubborn things: Assortative cheating

Lewinsky was an entrepreneur post-scandal and got a graduate degree from the LSE. Clinton is a Rhodes Scholar, governor, and president.

Petraeus is a decorated general and a Princeton PhD. Broadwell is a West Point grad, Harvard doctoral candidate, and author.

I'm just saying - they all did pretty well. Normally we think of assortative mating in terms of relationships with commitment mechanisms so that?long-term benefits can be extracted. What's interesting here is that that was not what these relationships were, and yet there's still a highly selective dimension to it.

It could just be a matter of opportunity, of course. Generally speaking, accomplished people hang around the White House and Langley. But it's also possible that this is not so much a "rational choice" as it is an evolved tendency (because?if it were a rational choice you presumably wouldn't see it as much in these more tawdry affairs).

Windows 8 modern UI business with SQL

Hello!

Ok so i have bought a tablet with Windows 8 pro on, i have "promised" my boss that i can convert some of our logistics software into touch screen Windows 8 apps, so that the user can have a better experience and the added mobility of the tablet instead of computers.

Today, all our software is WPF 4.5 connected to several SQL Server. I want to make a touch app with modern UI to use only in our business, and have no interest of Windows Store for this app (later in other apps, maybe)

Soooo, here i sit, 100% motivated for using the tablet business mode, but not sure how to start. What are my options to make an business-app outside store, which are using SQL server? Are there any work-arounds to the system.data which works on SQL Server? I see a lot of SQL-Lite workarounds, but none with SQL Server.

Can i make a .DLL which handles the communications with SQL server, and serves back in Windows RT approved data?
Can i make a service which runs on the tablet talking to SQL sever and presenting back web services?
Is there 3-party tools available soon to handle SQL server?

I really really really really would like to just use dataset and tableadapters in the Modern-UI look, this app will never see the windows store.
