SIA WINNING RETAILER OF THE YEAR: TROLLHAUGEN SKI SHOP

Trollhaugen Ski Shop in Dresser, WI was awarded the 2011 SIA SnowSports North Central Retailer of the Year Award for their contribution and commitment to the growth of the snow sports industry. Owned and operated by the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Rochford family, Trollhaugen Winter Recreation area has been an icon of the Midwest snow sports scene since 1950. John Wright, buyer at Trollhaugen Ski Shop, took some time out to give us some insight on how to be a winning retailer and the challenges he has faces.

SIA: How did you get started in the industry?
JW: I knew from the first time that I skied that this would be how I would spend the rest of my life. My first job was teaching skiing at a small area in Houlton, Wisconsin called 8 Flags over Birch Park. I was 16 years old and thought I had died and gone to heaven. From there, I worked in retail, moved on to being a manufacturer?s rep, and finally back to retail. To quote Max Marolt, ?It?s been a great ride.?

SIA: Tell us about one of your top retail success stories?
JW: Without question, our greatest challenge and our greatest success was battling our way back from the fire in 2008. The shop was destroyed by a devastating blaze that May. It took the entire summer to settle with the insurance company, and all fall to rebuild. We finally reopened on Christmas Eve 2008 with accessories only. The following season we came back full force with clothing, equipment and accessories. We are the only full service, full line ski shop at a ski area in this part of the country. Something we are all very proud of.

SIA: Words of Wisdom?
JW: If I were to speak with someone just getting started in the industry, I would try to impress upon them the value of following and never losing their passion for the sport. Too often the day to day grind gets in the way of continued participation in the sport we loved so much that we chose to make it our career.

If I can think of one negative that I have observed during my tenure in the industry, it would have to be that many of the principals in the business are no longer participants in the sport. Too many creative decisions are made by non-skiers or boarders. And to this fact I believe we have taken a giant step backwards.

How Pinterest is flipping the merchandising model for mobile retailers -

Pinterest is drastically shaking up mobile retail

Pinterest is one of the major social media sites responsible for driving significant sales for online retailers and?more brands need to take notice and?merchandise their mobile sites and applications to drive stronger traffic and ROI.

According to some mobile experts, social media needs to be viewed as a comprehensive part of a retailers? mobile strategy.

?When social is implemented as part of a comprehensive mobile strategy, it can become a powerful mechanism for marketers to amplify their merchandising initiatives,? said Carin Van Vuuren, chief marketing officer of Usablenet, New York.

?By leveraging a customer?s ability to easily share products, reviews, promotions and other content over social channels, businesses can engage with a much larger audience and maximize their reach. In essence, social media creates a multiplier effect to enhance a brand?s message over the mobile channel,? she said.

Social driver
Traditionally, retailers have merchandised mobile sites and apps based on what products are newest or most in season.

However, a recent study from comScore found that Pinterest is leading the pack as the fastest-growing social media site with a year-over-year growth of more than 4377 percent, showing how consumers are sometimes more in control of purchasing power than many brands.

The same study predicts that users who accessed the Web via mobile will surpass desktop users by 2014. With Pinterest?s emphasis on users sharing content via the mobile Web, the study points to the opportunities that retailers have to equip their mobile services with social media.

Etsy on Pinterest

Mobile retailers also need to think about how their content will be shared, whether it is through links or social sharing buttons.

Although Pinterest undoubtedly plays a big role for retailers, other social media sites are also important for retailers and brands, based on a company?s goals.

?At a high level, social media appeals to businesses that want to increase their brand awareness. However, which platform a business chooses to promote depends on what they believe will have the greatest reach based on their audience,? Ms. Van Vuuren said.

?And as social sharing continues to increase in popularity, we are experiencing a notable shift on the mobile channel. Instead of driving traffic that originates on their social platforms to mobile, brands are now viewing mobile as a starting point in the customer journey and are integrating social as part of the holistic user experience,? she said.

Build on data
Incorporating social media goes beyond a basic ?Like? with data at the core, say some.

Consumers are now major forces of deciding what others buy by sharing content across multiple devices.

Target?s mobile site lets users ?Like? products

Social media also needs to be viewed as part of a broader, multichannel marketing strategy, according to Craig Davis, CEO/founder of Relevvant, San Francisco.

?A range of factors, data and channels are now instrumental in the purchasing channel. We are looking to our friends, family and even complete strangers to recommend, guide and influence every product purchase we make,? Mr. Davis said.

?Further, with easier access to brand content on our mobile phones, consumers are constantly looking at product reviews, social recommendations, videos, images and user generated content ? merchandising has become more personal than ever before,? he said.

Taking a broader picture look at how consumers interact with a brand could lead to more personalized shopping experiences. For example, if a retailer had access to a consumer?s social media graph, then the home page of a mobile site or app could be personalized to show only products that a consumer has indicated that they are interested in.

Not only would consumers want to shop from a retailer with a more personalized experience, basket sizes would also likely increase as consumers find new products.

Time is always top-of-mind for mobile marketers, but social media adds an additional real-time element to consumers looking for information, recommendations and products while on their devices.

?Mobile shoppers want to be able to find what they are looking for, share it with their friends and purchase it quickly and easily ? often in 60 seconds or less,? said Dan Lowden, vice president of marketing at Digby, Austin, TX.

?Enabling social sharing on product pages allows retailers to see which products are most popular on mobile and then merchandise accordingly. Social media creates a two-way conversation between the consumer and the brand. Paying attention to social media channels lets retailers see which products are shared most often and receive the highest response. Retailers can also see what their most loyal ? and disloyal ? shoppers are saying about their brand and see where they are successful and where they need to improve,? he said.

Social commerce
Peter DiBart, regional vice president for Metia, New York, believes that social media needs to have a commerce-first approach.

Additionally, any content that a brand distributes can be seen as potentially leading to commerce, showing how social media has the ability to drive more than just online traffic.

?Every social experience can be transactional. Every transaction can be a social experience,? Mr. DiBart said.

?There?s an increasing number of people who are engaging with social media on their mobile devices, and the percentage of people being referred to mobile retail sites from social networks is on the rise. Your site must be mobile-friendly if you want to capture a socialized audience. The objective of a retailer should be to make it easy to discover and share product information ? social and mobile are equally important,? he said.

?By consuming brand content, your audience is contributing to the merchandising of your product. Marketers are no longer promoting a brand?s salable attributes ? they are creating full content and experience ecosystems around brands for audiences to consume.?

Final Take

Column Financier: How to finance imports through letters of credit

advantages of letters of credit in the calculation of import transactions are underestimated by many Russian companies. Often the matter is that the myths about the complexity of the letters of credit, which does not correspond to reality, and lack of understanding of the financial benefits of this tool, but they can be quite noticeable.

One of the important functions of the credit? protection of the interests of the parties entering into a foreign trade contract, on which we will not stop now. But apart from this letter of credit, there is another, equally important role? be an instrument of international trade finance. What is the mechanism of this operation?

When importing company needs a stay of execution of its obligations under the letter of credit and the issuing bank agrees to it, the payment shall be effected by any of the bank?s own funds? letter of credit issuer, or from funds collected by the issuing bank with a foreign bank.

first version of the importing firm is unprofitable, since entails lending rate of the Russian bank, and this automatically increases the cost of the deal because of the relatively high interest rates in domestic banks. So the second option applies when the Russian issuing bank is a foreign credit institution, ready to make financing a specific transaction at a lower rate. Foreign bank with a bank and the confirming.

letter of credit, which the company-importer does not provide cash cover, is a loan product. Therefore, the company at the opening of the letter of credit, banks will impose the same requirements as when applying for a conventional loan. Organizations need to provide bank documents confirming the financial condition and collateral as security. With the letter of credit can be financed as a regular supply of ( in the line of credit) and one-time foreign trade transactions.

Understanding of what constitutes the cost of credit will be easier to imagine the benefits of its use to finance imports. The ultimate value of credits in different banks may vary, as it is affected by many factors. But the pricing algorithm in this area are mainly the same.

The cost of the letter of credit is the cost of confirmation and the cost of funding provided. Sometimes there are additional expenses, depending on the specific rates of the issuing bank, but their value is not more than 1% per annum.

cost of confirmation, in turn, includes a bid confirming bank and the margin of the issuing bank. Calculate it as a percentage per annum. At its magnitude is influenced by several conditions: it is the state of the economy of the confirming bank and credit policy of the foreign bank, and the risk of confirmation, depending on the issuing bank and its country. But as a rule, the value of the confirming bank rate ranges from 1.5 to 4.25% for medium-sized Russian banks for the entire term of the credit ( one year), but sometimes this period can be reduced.

cost of financing consists of a bank?s margin? the issuer?s credit, the rate LIBOR / EURIBOR rates and foreign bank financing the deal. Calculate it as a percentage per annum. For many Russian banks borrow from foreign credit institutions can do in the LIBOR / EURIBOR plus 3-4.5% per annum for the duration of funding. Russian issuing bank determines the value of its margin, considering the subject of each client. This takes into account the stability of the financial situation of the importing firm, the type and quality of collateral, and the average monthly balances with the issuing bank.

The above rates are taken each in its own time and in the end not cumulative, but the total cost of confirmation of funding and shall not exceed the cost of conventional loans in Russian banks, as it will no longer be economically viable. If the cost of such letter of credit equal to the cost of conventional loans, the credit, of course, use a more advantageous from the standpoint of security guarantees for payment and compliance with the terms of delivery.

Today, a letter of credit with post-financing is one of the most common types of documentary tools, so as an importer receives many benefits by using it to finance its international trade activities.

should be noted that in the highly competitive international markets, the practice is widely distributed trade credit, deferred payment when he gives a supplier. Getting the post-financing, along with deferred payment does foreign trade is even more economically attractive.

Alaska wreckage from deadly 1952 military plane crash

By Chris Klint, Channel 2/KTUU.com, and msnbc.com staff

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? The wreckage of a military plane found near Knik Glacier?earlier this month has been identified as a Korean War-era Air Force cargo plane that crashed in the 1950s, killing all 52 people on board, NBC?station KTUU?of Anchorage reported Wednesday.

The identification brings closure to victims' families after nearly 60 years, KTUU said.

Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command spokesperson Capt. Jamie Dobson said?the wreckage,?discovered June 10 on Colony Glacier, about 45 miles east of Anchorage,?by a UH-60 Blackhawk crew with the Alaska Army National Guard-- is that of a Douglas C-124A Globemaster II that crashed?on Nov. 22, 1952.

See the original story at NBC station KTUU

While evidence collected by the eight-man teamis en route to JPAC?s Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii for further analysis, Dobson told KTUU?the plane was identifiable by materials found at the scene.

"Some of the evidence has already been positively correlated with this crash," Dobson told KTUU.

Harsh weather prevented a recovery at the time and later searchers could not locate it.

The Globemaster II entered Air Force service in 1950 as the world?s largest transport plane. Its forward loading ramp and aft cargo elevator, as well as its ability to carry 68,500 pounds of cargo or 200 passengers on two decks of seating, made it the Air Force's primary heavy-lift transport into the early 1960s, KTUU reported.

The four-propeller transport was eventually replaced by the C-141 Starlifter jet, but its name lives on in Alaska skies with the C-17 Globemaster III, operated by the 517th Airlift Squadron at Anchorage?s Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Crash researcher Tonja Anderson, whose grandfather Airman Isaac Anderson died in the crash, told KTUU the cargo plane was on a flight from McChord Air Force Base in Washington to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage when it crashed near the 8,000-foot level of Mount Gannett.

UEFA charges Spain, Russia over fans' racist abuse

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:37 a.m. ET June 26, 2012

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -UEFA charged the Spanish and Russian football associations on Tuesday for racist chants by fans at the European Championship.

The charges follow reports that monkey noises were directed by Spain fans at Italy forward Mario Balotelli, and that Russian fans targeted Czech Republic defender Theodor Gebre Selassie. Both players are black.

UEFA said it opened disciplinary cases for "improper conduct of their supporters (racist behavior, racist chanting)."

The European football body said its disciplinary panel will deal with the cases Thursday.

Spain and Russia will likely receive financial penalties if the cases are proven.

Russia has already been fined ?185,000 ($230,000) after being charged by UEFA over its fans' conduct at all three of its group-stage matches in Poland.

UEFA also threatened Russia with a six-point deduction in its 2016 European Championship qualifying group after some of its fans attacked stadium stewards in Wroclaw following the Czech match on June 8. UEFA has said the deduction would be enforced if fans repeated their violent behavior. The Russian FA has appealed that sanction.

In the first proven case of racist abuse at Euro 2012, UEFA fined the Croatia football association ?80,000 ($100,000) for a range of charges including insults directed at Balotelli.

Discrimination monitors appointed by UEFA reported that around 300 Croatia supporters made monkey noises at the Italy forward during a June 14 match in Poznan.

A Spanish fans' group previously reported that some Spain followers made monkey noises at Balotelli during a June 10 match in Gdansk. The group, affiliated to the Football Supporters Europe network, said other Spanish fans intervened urging the offenders to stop.

Gebre Selassie acknowledged that he was racially abused by Russians during the opening group match but declined to file a complaint.

UEFA received reports from monitors supplied by FARE, a Europe-wide fans' network, and later asked Czech team officials to help provide evidence which could be used to prosecute the case.

Russian fans displayed "illicit" imperialist flags and set off fireworks at each match, while a fan carrying a national flag aloft ran across the pitch after the match against Poland in Warsaw on June 12.

UEFA pledged a zero-tolerance policy toward combatting racism and discrimination inside Euro 2012 stadiums.

Russia was heavily favored to advance from Group A but was eliminated as the Czechs and Greece reached the quarterfinals.

On Monday, Russia FA president Sergei Fursenko announced his resignation during a televised meeting with state President Vladimir Putin.

The 10 Most Common Outsourcing Mistakes - FYI Business Consulting

Businesses small and large, at one time or another, will have a need to hire and outsourced service. ?Outsourcing is a good strategy for obtaining skills and resources in areas where there may be voids in your business. ?Some of the more common outsourced services are Sales, Marketing, IT, Printing, and Consulting. ?All too often, I see business owners, frustrated and unhappy with an outsourced service; only to compound their frustration by deciding against outsourcing when they should be. Here is an article that provides sound advise for business owners, solopreneurs, and corporate managers when considering outsourced services.

By Dave Lavinsky

In today?s business environment, you absolutely must outsource to stay competitive. No, I?m not talking about outsourcing your core competencies. But I am talking about outsourcing those business functions and activities that someone else can do faster, cheaper and/or more easily than you.

Unfortunately, when they start outsourcing, most entrepreneurs and small business owners make several mistakes. In this essay, I?m going to outline the 10 most common mistakes made when outsourcing work or projects to freelancers or other service providers not on your internal team [note that I use the term "freelancers" below to describe folks to whom you outsource].

Mistake #1: Define the task/project clearly

This is something I would do before even posting the project [i.e., to find the outsourced candidate]. Because you need to really understand the project in order to write an accurate job description. The process of defining the task/project clearly will also help you to estimate the costs, time frame, and skills needed from the person you hire.

One way to do this is to write down a very clear and descriptive explanation of the task. Another way is to record yourself speaking the description. Finally, another great way is to take a screen recording of yourself doing the work you wish to outsource (or taking a video of you doing the work if it?s not computer based). Try using a free screen recording program like Jing to make a quick video.

Mistake #2: Not having a well-planned estimate of costs

The more clearly you can define exactly what you need done by breaking it into parts, the better you can estimate how much time it will take ? and therefore how much it will cost at the person?s typical hourly rate. You don?t want to just hand a bunch of work to someone and then get surprised when you get their bill and/or incorrectly assume they took too long to complete a project.

If the project you need completed is something that requires specialized knowledge, describe the project to potential freelancers and get their opinion on what is really involved and how long it should take. If there?s no typical hourly rate for the work they?re doing, then just get a solid estimate of the total project cost and consider it to see if it makes sense compared to the revenue it should generate (or costs it should save).

Mistake #3: Know your timeframe for starting and finishing the work

If you?ve ever provided services for a client in a rush, you know how stressful it can be to drop everything at the last minute and make their emergency yours. The people you outsource to are no different, and it will benefit you to plan and begin things in advance and not at the last minute.

So for whatever work it is you want to do, figure out how long it will take and when it absolutely has to be completed. You?ll come out with a rough idea of when the work needs to commence. Then, give yourself a week or two before that to post projects, screen candidates, and choose the right person?maybe more.

Mistake #4: Hiring someone without enough experience

Nothing is worse than the blind leading the blind. When I hire someone to do something that I do not know how to do personally, they need to know how to do it ? period. They need to educate you on their chosen skill set, not the other way around.

Your role is to describe the end result you want, ask for and listen to their suggestions, and rely on their expertise and talent to achieve it according to your description.

Mistake #5: Not screening or testing enough freelancers

In choosing the right candidate, I would rather have more options to choose from than fewer. If you run a project only on Elance, for example, you are only going to get a few providers from Elance bidding on your project. This might be enough, but suppose you posted this same project (copy and paste) on Guru and ODesk as well? [Elance, Guru and ODesk are 3 of my recommended websites for finding freelancers and outsourced help]

I would rather have 30 applicants and choose from among the top three than to have 10 applicants and choose from among the top one.

Also, your goal is to build a list of qualified people to contact whenever you need them for projects or ongoing work. So even if you post a project and only hire one person, keep tabs of the runner-ups so to contact or test later on for future projects.

Mistake #6: Choosing someone with no room to grow

If you are outsourcing a project (e.g., graphic design) that you know you?ll need again in the future, you want to have one eye on the present project and your future needs. Think about what similar services you?ll need in the future and to what extent?

Or, if you have a freelancer build something that, once done, needs maintenance, then be sure to ask them about their work hours and schedule. Find out if they have enough time left for your needs in addition to their other clients. It?s terrible to go back to a great freelancer later on who is apologetic but too busy to help you.

Mistake #7: Outsourcing your weakness

If your business is weak in a certain area, it may also be weak at managing someone performing the work outside of your company, too. Think about it? every worthwhile endeavor requires some basic knowledge and strategy, as well as some understanding of how to perform the work and measure the results.

At least get this working knowledge upfront so that you can be effective at managing your freelancers. It doesn?t matter if someone else is doing the work or not, if you don?t start the project with a clear outcome and strategy, and continue to stay on top of it (not washing your hands and hiding somewhere) it will fail regardless of the skills and intelligence of your outsourcers.

Mistake #8: Lack of communication

You heard of management by walking around? well, this here is called seagull management. A seagull manager will be gone for days on end and suddenly come sailing in with the wind, squawking and dropping tons of work on everybody, and then flying away never to be seen again for days or weeks on end.

What seagull managers don?t realize is that you have to constantly be there for your team. This doesn?t mean it needs to take a lot of time, but they would appreciate fast responses just as you like them from others.

Again, just because someone else is performing the work does not mean you can abdicate your responsibility to support and manage them to achieve the result.

Mistake #9: Insufficient feedback

If you plan on using your freelancer for more than just a few quick tasks, then you will want to invest in your relationship with them from the beginning. Your job as a manager is to coach them and help them to do things exactly as you want over time.

You should expect them to make mistakes and encourage them to fail quickly so you can give feedback and show how to do it the right way. Don?t be a perfectionist, and don?t make them afraid or hesitant to admit challenges or mistakes and then blame them later.

Many managers just assume that the people who are working for them can read their minds and know all the little details without being told. This is not true, even when the person is highly intelligent. It?s your job to communicate clearly and often.

Mistake #10: Underutilizing hired talent

This probably keeps most entrepreneurs and small business owners from outsourcing in the first place. As entrepreneurs, I have to admit that we can have some pretty big egos. While this helps in the vision and confidence departments, it can also lead to the ?no one can do it as well as I can? syndrome.

Maybe not, but I would still rather have 10 people who are 80% as good as me doing 90% of the work. Think about it! Besides, with proper coaching and support, you can make a good person great-as long as they are coachable and motivated to grow.

And even when you are outsourcing work to someone, don?t miss opportunities to give them even more work once they have proven themselves with some smaller task. I like to list all the work required on a consistent basis and check the sub-items off as I outsource them, one at a time.

McAfee: Sneaky Teens Surf On PCs More Than Mobile, Facebook Rules Over All Other Social Networks

teen computerGoing mobile may be the mantra for a lot of tech companies these days, but if they're in the business of targeting teenagers with their services, perhaps they should think twice: over 37 percent of teens use laptops, and a further 30 percent rely on desktop machines to surf online and engage with digital content, but only 13.5 percent use smartphones and only five percent use tablets, according to a new study out today from Intel-owned security specialists McAfee. The study, covering online activity among U.S. teens, also reveals a pretty massive disconnect between parents and their kids when it comes to how the latter is using the internet -- with some big security implications within that -- and the revelation that teens are not actually that rebellious compared to their adult counterparts when it comes to engaging with social media, in many cases using the same sites their parents do to communicate with each other.

'Verge of explosion': Huge election protest in Egypt

Thousands of protesters filled Cairo's Tahrir Square for Friday prayers as Egypt's presidential candidates accused each other of trying to steal the election. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By Reuters

CAIRO -- Thousands of flag-waving protesters filled Cairo's Tahrir Square for Friday prayers as Egypt's presidential candidates, an Islamist and former general, accused each other of trying to steal an election whose result is still not known five days on.

The Muslim Brotherhood, whose candidate Mohammed Morsi says he has already won, called on supporters to gather at the birthplace of last year's Arab Spring revolt until the ruling military council rescinds orders that curb the new president's powers and dissolved the new, Islamist-led parliament.

The delay in announcing the results of two days of voting which ended on Sunday also raised fears that the army may try to swing the election to Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander whom Mubarak made prime minister just before his fall.

Tens of thousands of people fill Cairo's Tahrir Square, calling on the military to relinquish power to an elected president. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

A result is not expected until Saturday or Sunday, giving the country a tense weekend, although the vast majority, many not greatly enamored of either candidate in the run-off, were staying at home and passing Friday's Muslim weekend as normal.

'Classic counter revolution'
For many -- both in the organized mass Islamist movements and in the more fragmented secular, liberal opposition -- a Shafiq victory, coupled with the military council taking powers over legislation and drafting a constitution, would mean that the six decades of army rule they thought were over, will in fact go on.

"This is a classic counter revolution that will only be countered by the might of protesters," said Safwat Ismail, 43, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood who came from the Nile Delta. "I am staying in the square until the military steps down."

Thousands of supporters of Muslim Brotherhood presidential candidate Mohammed Morsi pack Cairo's landmark Tahrir Square on Friday.

Mahmoud Mohammed, a bearded, 31-year-old marine engineer from Alexandria among a group from the more fundamentalist Salafist movement camping on the square, insisted they were not looking for a battle, but wanted to see democracy installed.

"The people elected a parliament and they put it in the rubbish bin. We need the army to hand over," he said, adding: "No one came here for a fight. We need democracy."

Prayer
Around him, the broad traffic interchange by the Nile in central Cairo was filled with makeshift tents offering shade from the midday sun, hawkers offering an array of goods from tea to "I Love Tahrir Square" T-shirts and a mostly devout crowd of men, many bussed in from the provinces, who knelt in prayer.

Official results from Egypt's presidential election have been delayed, sending political tensions soaring. ITV's Lindsey Hilsum reports.

Other parts of the crowd chanted and waved Egyptian flags.

The dissolution of parliament ordered by judges appointed under Mubarak and enforced by the army; the military decree on new constitutional arrangements; and the delay in announcing the president by an electoral commission appointed under the old regime have sapped confidence in a process Egyptians hoped would lead to real reform.

Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last premier when the army forced out the dictator to appease the Tahrir protesters, challenged Morsi's self-proclaimed victory and said on Friday he was sure he had won, despite Islamist pressure on officials.

He stopped short of emulating Morsi, who claimed outright victory on the basis of the Brotherhood's own tally of results from local polling stations, but said was "confident."

At a televised address to whooping and cheering supporters, Shafiq said: "These protests in the squares, the campaigns of terror and the media manipulation are all attempts to force the election committee to announce a particular result."

Philippe Bouchon / AFP - Getty Images

The President of Egypt for nearly 30 years, Mubarak was an advocate for peace in the Middle East and a major U.S. ally, but Egyptians eventually grew tired of his corrupt regime and he was ousted in a popular revolt in February 2011.

In a country where virtually no one can remember an election that was not rigged before last year, trust is low, not least among Brotherhood officials, many of whom, like Morsi, were jailed under Mubarak for their political activities.

The same electoral commission that handed an improbable 90 percent of a November 2010 parliamentary vote to Mubarak's supporters - a result which fueled the protests that brought him down a few weeks later - sits in judgment on the new presidency.

Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan said on Thursday the delay "generates concern, no doubt", expressing fear that the authorities were getting ready to announce Shafik the winner. "The doubt extends to this possibility."

Egyptian media have described a nation on edge.

Protesters in Egypt's Tahrir Square are suspicious of official statements regarding the health of ousted leader Hosni Mubarak. An electoral commission has said it will not announce the result of Egypt's presidential election until Thursday. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Al-Ahram, the main establishment newspaper, noted there was intense pressure from within Egypt - and from the army's key sponsor, the United States - to sort out the situation quickly to ensure pledges of democracy were met.

It noted that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had called for an "inclusive democratic process" and said the army must not "dominate or subvert the constitutional authority."

"The interest of the nation goes before narrow interests," said reformist politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a former U.N. diplomat and Nobel peace laureate on Twitter. "What is required immediately is a mediation committee to find a political and legal exit from the crisis. Egypt is on the verge of explosion."

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is suffering from ailing health and meanwhile, thousands of activists are taking to Tahrir Square in protest of the nation's military rule. Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer and MSNBC Military Analyst Col. Jack Jacobs join MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan to explain the situation abroad.

Activists hail success of Twitter storm against fossil fuel subsidies

?

Climate and anti-poverty activists have launched a 24-hour ?Twitter storm? against the hundreds of billions of dollars of government subsidies paid each year to the petroleum and coal industry, despite the global economic downturn and the rise in emissions.

The blitz, which has been supported by Stephen Fry, Robert Redford, actor Mark Ruffalo, politicians and environmentalists, took the hash tag #endfossilfuelsubsidies up to number two in the ranking of globally trending topics and number one in the US.

?We?re averaging a tweet a second, but it picks up when celebs hit the hashtag,? said Jamie Henn of www.350.org, a climate group that is among the leaders of the campaign.

The online demonstration came as negotiators at the Rio+20 sustainable development conference remained divided over proposals to phase out the provision of public funds to carbon dioxide polluters.

Saudi Arabia and Venezuela ? two big oil-producing nations ? are accused of holding up progress on this issue, which will be high on the agenda of leaders who attend the Rio Earth summit later this week and the upcoming G20 in Mexico.

Activists with Avaaz.org, Friends of the Earth, and 350.org delivered a petition of more than 750,000 signatures calling for an end to fossil fuel subsidies to 10 Downing Street this morning. Similar petitions will be presented in other nations.

Tweets have already been projected on the Sydney Opera House and will later be projected in London, New York, New Delhi and Rio. This follows a demonstration in Rio yesterday in which campaigners unfurled a massive trillion dollar bill on Copacabana beach marked with calls for an end to the subsidies, which are approaching that scale.

?This world has a few problems where a trillion dollars might come in handy ? and we?d have a few less problems if we weren?t paying the fossil fuel industry to wreck the climate,? said 350.org founder Bill McKibben. ?This is the public policy no-brainer of all time.?

International Energy Agency figures show that government subsidies for fossil fuels are 12 times greater than those for renewable energy. Jake Schmidt, of the Natural Resources Defense Council, wrote in a blog: ?Given tight budget times and the need to address global warming, subsidising activities that are heating the planet just doesn?t make sense. The only beneficiaries of fossil fuel subsidies are oil, gas and coal companies that are raking in record profits at the expense of the rest of us.?

The G20 promised action three years to phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, but a new report by Oil Change International, Phasing out Fossil fuel Subsidies in the G20: a Progress Update, suggests they have not yet eliminated any because the definition of ?inefficient? is vague.

Gro Harlem Brundtland, one of the architects of global sustainable governance, said she was hopeful that Rio+20 could produce a clear commitment to act on this problem.

She said: ?It is outrageous that this is happening still. It was clear 20 years ago that it had to stop. But it continues still. It will mean changing the tax system. You can?t take from poor. But the point is that most of these subsidies go to the rich not the poor. So if we can change the incentive system so poor people are given the same opportunities without polluting environment then we can change this wrong-footed way of inspiring development.?
