Savannah State, which lost 84-0 to Oklahoma State in its opener, was listed as a 70.5-point underdog on Wednesday by Las Vegas oddsmakers for Saturday's game at Florida State, according to the Los Angeles Times, and, if it holds, it would represent the largest point spread in college football history.
Citing the point spread used by pregame.com, the Times noted that the 70.5-point margin eclipses the 60-point spread when Hawaii was favored over Northern Colorado in 2007.
Hawaii's margin of victory in that game was just 57 (63-6), so those who took Northern Colorado won their bets.
Oklahoma State was favored by 67.5 points over Savannah State at the start of last week, but by game time, the spread had closed to 58 points.
It would not have mattered. Oklahoma State covered both spreads.
Savannah State received $385,000 to play Oklahoma State in Stillwater and is scheduled to make $475, 000 for its game at Florida State, which is ranked No. 6 after beating FCS school Murray State 69-3 in its opener.
Savannah State, which is also an FCS program, has beaten only three schools the past three seasons - North Carolina Central (twice), Livingstone and Edward Waters.
Savannah State is unlikely to break the record for the most lopsided loss. In 1916, Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland 220-0. People thought so much of the coach who ran up the score in that game that an important trophy was named after him. John Heisman was Georgia Tech's coach.
